I am still struggling for words after the incredible experience we had at this restaurant tonight. From the warm greeting by the hostess, to the perfect timing and attention of our waiter, to our view of three masters creating an indescribable menu before our eyes, I cannot overstate how much I wish there were more than 5 stars to offer this restaurant. The chefs are individual artists and members of a finely tuned team. This is the kind of place where you trust the chef's decisions and don't try to tweak a thing. They know exactly what they are doing, and the heart and effort in designing and executing each day's menus is so very obvious. The preparation is perfect. The visual artistry is so appealing. The flavor and texture combinations are inspired. Bravo to every single person who contributes to this unforgettable dining experience.
It's definitely a custom menu every day as they print these menus. Maybe we had an off day but the food wasn't the greatest compared to other restaurants. My halibut was a chunk but was under cooked twice, still raw in the middle and didn't have an outstanding taste. Wife ordered the same, hers was cooked properly but basic. Octopus appetizer was great, and my daughter's duck breast was delicious. 3 other couples we know loved their experience here, we're glad we tried it. We will try it's sister location honeysuckle rose next.
We were greeted at the front porch and my wife was given a flower for our anniversary. They complimented her ring, gave use a glass of champagne and then we were taken to our table. We sat at the chefs table. The food was absolutely incredible, the drink menu was thoughtfully curated and the service was unmatched. Everything was perfect. We recommend this place to everyone!
Went to Southbound over the weekend for a girls trip/birthday celebration. They took amazing care of us! We were given champagne and roses for the birthday girls while we waited and we were seated at the “chefs table”. Everything there is made over a fire so the chefs table was a bit hot but the entertainment was worth it! The drinks were amazing (Lots of espresso martinis), the apps were amazing, the sides were amazing and we had the best experience! The menu is updated regularly so I am unable to recommend everything we had but just ask the staff and they won’t steer you wrong! We closed the place down! Would recommend!
First time there, and it was a fabulous experience. From the moment we entered, I was greeted with a rose and glasses of champagne to celebrate our anniversary. Our server John was on point. Everyone was so friendly. We got sous vide octopus then I got the duck breast, and my husband got the pork chop with a side of sweet, mashed potato with almonds everything was cooked to perfection!! For dessert, I had the sweet potato pudding with a ganache that was out of this world. Then they came out with a personalized card congratulating us on our anniversary with a candle and a chocolate covered Oreo. The staff and the food were exceptional. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are in the Charleston area.
Southbound was great from start to finish! The staff was super nice and the cuisine was delicious. Shout out to our server Lillian! She made our night! The restaurant used to be a house but was converted and it looks amazing inside and out. We will definitely eat at Southbound again in the future!
Loved everything about our incredible early evening dinner with my daughter, who is a freshman at nearby College of Charleston. The cocktails, steak tartare appetizer, steak entree & outstanding Yukon gold potatoes were beyond spectacular. Service from Stephen was superior. Sitting in the garden & being serenaded by their acoustic guitarist/singer, only made the evening that much more special!! Cannot wait to come back soon.
With great expectations we dined at Southbound last night, a relatively new restaurant on Canon St. They did a significant renovation of an existing large house and literally used every square inch. Bars and a variety of dining seating on two floors as well as porch and patio seating made for a variety of dining possibilities. The place was almost full, surprisingly at 5:30p but it was a Friday evening. We were attended promptly and lead up a winding staircase to an upper room behind a bar. There was an adjacent dining deck separated from indoor dining by French doors. Unfortunately these doors had impossibly difficult door hardware that continually confounded the waitstaff who could not open it when carrying plates. We actually got up from dining a couple of times to open the door for plate laden waitstaff.
The dining room we occupied was pleasantly furnished and intimate but was troubled by kitchen smoke. So much so that there was a slight hint of blue to the air. It was like being slightly downwind from an ebbing camp fire. Our clothing was actually permeated with smoke by the time we left.
The menu was not extensive but it was inventive and had something for everyone. The grouper was excellent and the Mexican street peppers were very good as well. The pasta dish was good but over salted and unfortunately all the meals and sides were only lukewarm and in one case(mashed sweet potatoes) cold. Obviously detracting from our experience. Plenty of cocktails, wine and beer offerings from their “Beverage Bible “. Limited dessert choices.
Service was slow but competent and pleasant. They may have a shortage of personnel in both the kitchen and floor. It’s good that we planned a two hour dinner because it took every bit of that and then some. Street parking, but there is plenty of that on Cannon. Prices were high even from a downtown Charleston standpoint.
Overall we were disappointed. We give it three and one-half clams on the coveted Five Quahog Rating Scale.
